Description |
Large rusted silver metal stove from the Red Dog Cabin made by Albert "Cookie" L’Ecluse. There are two numbers associated with the stove – 2022.4.1a and 2022.4.1b. See below for details. 2022.4.1a: The stove consists of a large barrel fire box, a square oven attached to the centre of the stove pipe, and rectangular box at the top of the stove pipe. The fire box is made from a large metal barrel with a square cutout on the front. A hinged door is attached to the right side of the opening. The front of the door has crossed bars detailing and eight visible rivets. There is a latch on the left side of the opening to secure the door closed. There is an oblong tray with raised walls underneath the fire box and a large thin rectangular tray attached to the top. The stove pipe is attached to the upper rear of the fire box. A large square box ("oven") with a hinged door is attached to the centre of the stove pipe. The door opens down and there is a long lever/latch attached to the top. The interior of the "oven" has a small rack inside and the inside of the door has a tin can attached to the centre. A small chain is attached to both the door and the frame of the "oven" to keep the door stable when open. A rectangular box with a handle on the front is attached to the top of the oven and has a short stove or flue pipe attached to the back. There is a decorative plate attached to the bottom of the box (starburst) as well as to the end of the flue pipe. There are parts of ski bindings throughout the stove as decorations (side of fire box, box at top, latches). The stove is supported by a pipe framework with four legs with bracing in between. There is also bracing between the fire box and the oven. The artwork (2022.4.1b) sits in brackets on the right side of the oven. 2022.4.1b: Silver metal art plate from the Red Dog Cabin stove. The rectangular piece of artwork has three mountains at the top and two figures skiing on the bottom. The figures are facing left and cross-country skiing. There are several pine trees painted around the skiers and multiple ridges have been painted onto the mountains. A small "HART" name plate has been attached to the upper portion of the artwork. The artwork is 3-d with multiple layers of metal attached together with small grommets. |

Provenance |
Albert "Cookie" L’Ecluse built stoves for many of the Rossland Range cabins. He hand-built his stoves using scrounged/salvaged materials and "pop"-rivets, sheet metal screws, and nuts and bolts. When he needed to cut a hole in a barrel for a door or chimney, he used a hammer and cold chisel. He didn’t have a workshop, so many of his stoves were built on the tailgate of his pickup truck. The neighbours could tell when he was working on a stove by the terrible din of sheet metal being pounded into the shape of a stove. Many of Cookie’s stoves had small ovens so that visitors to the cabins could make a toastie while they warmed up. The Red Dog Cabin was constructed in 1997 by a groups of friends (the Rossland "old-timers"), led by "Moe" Fisher. Because the site has road access, the group was able to bring in a telephone-pole truck and drive foundation holes for the cabin. Using logs and heavy timbers, the Red Dog Cabin was much better than the traditional pole-and-tarp shacks elsewhere in the Rossland Range. The Red Dog Cabin has been renovated and remains part of the public cabins in the Rossland Range Recreation Area. During renovations, the stove was removed from the cabin as it was no longer safe to be used and brought to the museum for display. The Red Dog stove, along with one from the Cookie Jar cabin was formally donated to the museum in 2022. The RMDC archive also holds archival material associated with the Red Dog Cabin. |
