Description |
1971.477.1a: Large cream clay/ceramic assaying cupel or crucible. The cupel is shaped like a cup that has a large round opening at the top that tapers to a smaller round bottom. There is a patch/drip of dried residue on the front that extends to the bottom. The residue has a shiny appearance. There is hardened residue on the interior of the cupel (slight green tinge) and staining on the bottom of the interior. 1971.477.1b: Used/stained bone ash fire assaying cupel or crucible. The cupel has a wide round opening on the top, that gently taper to a smaller round bottom. The cupel has been well used, as evidence of large patches of dried residue (possibly slag) throughout the interior and exterior – most evident on the front of the cupel. The exterior is mottled black/dark grey from use. There is a large chip on the left side of the rim, revealing the original cream colour of the cupel. The bottom has the maker’s information and cupel size in depressed lettering (see inscription). |
