Description |
Double sided fabric Western Federation of Miners union membership badge or pin. The front of the badge is a faded blue with an attached medallion on a wide white satin ribbon. The medallion has graphics of two shaking hands, an eagle with a shield, and the Canadian crest with the words "Justice to all In Union There is Strength" arching around the graphics in black lettering. Small crossed red ensign flag and American flags are attached to the white ribbon above the medallion. There is "38 W.F. of M. Rossland, B.C. Organized 10th July, 1895" in gold lettering on the badge base beneath the medallion. There is a banner-style pin at the top of the badge that has a coloured graphic of two shaking hands. The reverse of the pin has a large straight pin that catches in a small metal loop when closed. The reverse of the badge is black with silver detailing. There is a large circle with a graphic of a crossed sledge hammer, shovel and pick axe at the top underneath "In Memoriam". "In Memoriam" has an ornate border on the top and bottom. "Rossland Miners’ Union No. 38 W.F. of M. Rossland, B.C. Organized 10th July, 1895" is spaced out underneath the graphic. The badge has a brass/gold metallic thread border and fringe on the bottom. |

Provenance |
The badges were double sided, so that when attending a union member’s funeral, the union members could respectfully identify as union members. The Rossland branch (no. 38) of the Western Federation of Miners, locally known as the miners’ union, was the first international branch of the union. The group met in Miners’ Union Hall after it was built in 1898. Miners’ Union Hall was recognized as a National Historic Place in 2020. |
