Description |
Black fibreglass and leather firefighter's helmet from the Rossland Fire Department. The helmet has a round, bulbous top with a ridge down the centre. The rim of the helmet is wide and flares downward from the bottom of the dome of the helmet. The front of the rim slopes downward more than the sides, protecting the wearer's forehead, while the reverse longer and wider to protect the neck. There is a black leather crest-shaped identification plaque attached to the front of the helmet. There is a large white inset "7" in the centre of the plaque with a white, oblong, inset rectangle with "RFD" in red. The plaque is attached to the helmet by two screws and four pins (bottom right side pin is missing). A small d-ring is attached to the reverse rim to hang the helmet from when not in use. There is a string threaded through a series of holes around the base of the helmet's dome to attach to the head rest and bracing to the interior of the helmet. The interior of the helmet has a leather and canvas head bracing attached to the sides of the helmet and a leather chinstrap. The bracing consists of a circular, light brown leather head rest with three canvas "braces" tied together in the centre. The longer side of the chinstrap is attached to the right side of the helmet and has a brass hook on the end. The shorter side of the chinstrap is on the left side and has a d-ring on the end. There is no way to adjust the sizing of the chinstrap. There is the accession number from the BC Firefighter's museum on the front of the helmet. The RMDC accession number has been placed underneath the BCFFM one. |

Provenance |
Used by the Rossland Fire Department. Donated to the RMDC after the BC Firefighter's Museum closed (early-mid 1990s). The BCFFM was located in the old Rossland Fire Hall. The museum was only open for a few years before it closed and its artifacts transferred/donated to the appropriate museums. |
