Description |
William Dorey's navy blue Royal Canadian Legion Branch #14 beret. The beret is circular with a smaller band that goes around the head smaller than the top. The front of the beret has a large Legion patch with a gold metal "14" pin underneath it. The logo consists of a circle with a Union Jack flag with a maple leaf in the centre with a ring of text that surrounds it and a crown at the top. The circle is surrounded by "British Empire Service League" and has a banner at the bottom with "Legion" in it. The beret is lined with black fabric that has a grey maker's stamp in the centre. The stamp is oval shaped with "William Scully Limited" at the top with a man wearing an old fashioned military battle helmet in the center and "Montreal" at the bottom. On the left side it says "Trade Mark" and on the right side it says "Registered." |
Provenance |
William Dorey was born in Rossland in 1926 and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in the early 1940s. He served as a ASDIC or sonar operator aboard the HMCS French, an examination vessel based out of Mulgrave, Nova Scotia. After the war, Will returned to Rossland, marrying Pat Bowen on September 25, 1946. Together, William and Pat had three children - Colleen, Rob, and Cecilia. Will had a love of travelling and a curiosity about the world and other cultures - a love that his children attribute to the broadening of his horizons that leaving Rossland had given him. Some of the happiest times for Will were when he was working abroad in Turkey (Pat joined him for this experience) and Africa. After Will retired from Cominco, he enjoyed his time at the family cabin at Christina Lake, hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. Will was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #14 and was honoured to march in the Remembrance Day parade each year (image 1). Will passed away in 2006 at the age of 80. |
