Description |
Double sided Western Federation of Miners’ No. 38 membership badge. The front of the badge ribbon is blue and has a brass metal badge bar at the top, a short top ribbon with a medallion, and brass-coloured metal fringe on the bottom. "Rossland Miners’ Union No.38 W F. of M. Rossland, B.C. Organized 16th July 1895" is in faded gold lettering on the bottom of. The top ribbon is off white with crossed British Colony (red with union jack) and USA flags with silver flagpoles. The medallion is attached to the bottom of the ribbon and has a yellow paper insert with a Miners’ Union emblem in the centre with the words "Justice to All In Union There is Strength" around it. The emblem consists of an eagle with the US shield (stars and stripes) and the Crest of Canada with a graphic of two shaking hands above them. The badge bar has a brass-coloured frame with a white paper insert with a coloured graphic of two shaking hands with the phrase "In Union There is Strength" around the graphic. The bar has a clear plastic covering. The reverse of the ribbon is black with "In Memoriam" at the top and "Rossland Miners’ Union No.38 W F. of M. Rossland, B.C. Organized 16th July 1895" at the bottom in faded silver lettering. There is a faded silver graphic of a crossed pickaxe, shovel, and axe in a circle between the blocks of text. The reverse of the badge bar is copper coloured and has a straight pin attached for wearing. The two layers of ribbon are attached at the top and bottom, not the sides. The manufacturer’s information is printed in black lettering on a brown piece of cardboard in between the layers of ribbon (see Custom-Tag). Rossland’s branch of the Western Federation of Miners (more commonly referred to as Miners’ Union) was the first international branch of the union. Union No. 38 was founded in July 1895. Miners’ Union Hall was completed in 1898 and was granted National Historic status in 2020. Badges like these were double sided, so the "In Memoriam" side could be worn at funerals. |
