Description |
Green plastic souvenir/promotional thermometer in the shape of a skeleton key from the Orwell Hotel. The bow of the key has a solid centre with four loops on the exterior. "Compliments of Orwell Hotel / Lil & Otto, Props / Phone 362-5323 / Rossland, B.C." is in black lettering in the centre of the bow. The shaft of the key has a cavity that houses the thermometer. The thermometer has a gold backing with black numbers and measurement lines, with the thermometer tube attached in two places. The thermometer tube has a round bottom and is partially filled with red material. The bit on the key extends to the right and have two cut-outs on the top and bottom, making up the teeth. |
Provenance |
The donor collected business and organization memorabilia from the Rossland and Trail area over several decades. The Orwell Hotel operated out of 2003 Columbia Avenue from 1903 until the 1990s. The hotel, originally named the Bellevue, was constructed in 1897. During the first few years of operation, the hotel changed owners and name multiple times, until Nelson W Macleod purchased the hotel in 1903. Today, the hotel is operated at the Flying Steamshovel and is the only hotel built during the Rossland gold rush days that still operates as a hotel. |
