Description |
John Greene's large handmade wooden toy crane. The body of the crane is wide enough for a child to sit down and operate it. The crane has three large metal poles that converge with a pulley system at the top, so one could pull things up with a rope. There is a hook on the end of the rope. Some of the mechanisms of the pulley system are rusted. The base is two separate pieces, with the top being able to swivel. The crane has four wooden wheels, allowing the crane to be pushed around by the rider. |

Provenance |
The crane was made by the donor’s father, Robert (Bob) Greene for the donor. The crane was probably made about 1952 and 1953 when he was 5 or 6. John remembers playing with it a lot and getting his knuckles rapped when it was lifting something fairly heavy, and John’s fingers slipped off one of the cranks. After a few of these incidents, Bob Greene installed brakes, which worked by sliding the crank into the side of the crane where it was supposed to be held by the screw heads that protrude from the side. Theses did not work very well thus John’s knuckles got rapped even more. |
