Description |
Colour photograph of the competitors in the men's cross-country race at the starting line during the 1994 Canadian National Mountain Bike Championships held in Rossland during the Rubberhead Bike Festival. The racers are lined up in a row on their bikes, all wearing helmets and race tops in a variety of colours. Their numbers are attached to the front of their bikes. An additional row of racers is farther back on the street, mostly obscured by the front row. There are spectators lining Columbia Avenue, standing in front of the stores on the north side of the street. While most of the stores/businesses on the north side of the street between Washington and Monte Christo streets are visible, not all of the names can be made out. The only store with a legible name is Devito Shoe Repair (left side). There is a food mart beside it, but the full name cannot be made out. The Rossland Post Office and Rossland Court House can also be made out. Multi-coloured pennant garland strung from the street lights completes the scene. |

The 1994 Rubberhead Bike Festival took place from August 24 - August 28, with the Canadian Nationals taking place between August 27 and 28th. The Canadian Glacier National Cross-Country Champions was also the final race in the Canada Cup. The course for the race started in downtown Rossland and had the riders climbing over 800 feet every 8km lap they completed and followed much of the Techno-Grind trail. The Rubberhead Bike Festival was started in 1985 and ran annually until 1995. The original events at the festival included cross-country, downhill, dual slalom, and techno-grind races. The Rubberhead was revived in 2008 for several years, bringing the once great festival back to life. The events included the Dreadhead Super-D, Huck ‘en Berries Jump Jam, and the Seven Summits Poker Ride. The Huck ‘en Berries Jump Jam is still celebrated in Rossland during Golden City Days, keeping the spirit of this festival alive. |
