Description |
Black and white negative of Roger Terhune (left) and Army Hartley (right) an underground blacksmith shop in the Black Bear Mine Adit. The blacksmith shop has a wood panelled wall with a window at the back and a jagged rock wall on the left. Roger Terhune is sitting at a table at the back of the room, wearing a dark jacket and a hard hat. Army Hartley is standing at an anvil and is wearing a dark pants, a dark sweater with fish on it, and a hard hat. He is holding a hammer in is proper right hand and a long piece of drill steel in his proper left. The drill steel is resting on the anvil, which is quite small and mounted on a large log. Behind the anvil is a makeshift forge with a large set of bellows attached to a large wood frame. A chain attached to the bellows and there is a large handle hanging from the centre of the frame. There is a narrow gauge railway behind the man at the anvil. |

The Black Bear Mine operated from 1893 to 1917 as part of the Le Roi Mine group. The Black Bear was a horizontal adit that connected with the Le Roi Mine main shaft. The Black Bear recovered 176 oz gold, 318 oz silver, and 9290 lb of copper. As part of the Rossland Museum's Centennial Project, the Black Bear Mine Adit was reopened to be part of the Museum's tourism offerings. The Museum ran seasonal mine tours from 1967/68 until 2009 when the mine was closed. The tunnel entrance was collapse in 2011/2012. Visitors to the Museum are still able to see where the entrance was, although it is fenced off for safety reasons. |
