Carl Raymond Davis was born on 12 January 1874 to Samuel Kirby Davis and Mary Eliza Hough in Cleveland, Ohio. He was raised with his five siblings (Maud, Harry, Percival, Mabel, and Dorothy) in Cleveland, before the family moved to Montana in 1894. When Carl was 18, he enrolled in the Montana Mining School, paying his way by tutoring students in mathematics. In 1895, Carl graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a specialization in mining copper. In September 1899, Carl was appointed the assistant manager at the War Eagle Mine in Rossland. He married Clara May Wood (b. 1876, d. 1921) on 4 October 1899 in Denver and the couple moved to Rossland for Carl to take up his position. The couple went on to have three children in Rossland - John Kirby (b. 1901, d. 1990), Helen Wood (b. 1903, d. 1991), and Dorothy Hough (b. 1904, d. 1974). Carl resigned from the War Eagle Mine in 1905 to manage the Lancaster Group of mines in Krugersdorp, South Africa. His mining career continued for years and he became a very successful mining engineer. Carl and May had two additional children in South Africa - Carl Raymond (b. 1911, d. 1940) and Ruth Chamberlain (b. 1913, d. 1986). After May passed away in 1921, Carl got remarried to Margaret Elizabeth Stewart (b. 1883, d. 1944), the couple remaining in South Africa. Carl passed away on 16 January 1956 at the age of 82. |
