Admin/Biographical History |
William Wadds (1867-1937) was born in Castle Dobbs, Kilroot, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland on 22 January 1867 to Margaret and George Wadds. William was the third of eight children. The family immigrated to Canada in 1877 and after graduating William began a watchmaking apprenticeship in Barrie, Ontario. William eventually settled in Vancouver before moving to Rossland in June of 1895 to open a watch and jewellery business. However, he never opened a business, applying for the vacant postmaster position instead. He became Rossland’s Postmaster General on 1 October 1895. In 1897, William rode along the old Dewdney Trail from Rossland to Vancouver to marry Ethel Annette Morris on 24 July 1897. In 1902 the couple moved into a newly built home (2565 Columbia Ave) that was designed by John J Honeyman. The couple welcomed sons George "Bill" Morris Wadds (1903-1982) on 3 June 1903 and David Morris Wadds on 28 April 1907. Ethel Wadds passed away on 22 June 1923 and was interred in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver. Periodically throughout the early 1920s, William’s son George worked with him at the Rossland Post Office, before becoming the Assistant Post Master in 1924. George Wadds married Dorothy Grace Brett on 2 September 1924 and the couple welcomed children Ethel Ada Wadds on 24 August 1928 and Morris Esling Wadds on 10 April 1940. David Wadds married Katherine Stewart on 29 June 1928 and together the couple had children Estelle Anne Elizabeth Wadds (3 March 1929) and William John Wadds (26 September 1938). William remained Rossland’s Postmaster until his death in 1937. William was interred in Mountain View Cemetery in Trail. |
