Admin/Biographical History |
Richard Harvey Mann (a.k.a. Richie Mann) was born on March 16th, 1933 to Richard P. and Barbara M. Mann and grew up in Rossland. He went to MacLean Elementary and Rossland High School on Cook Avenue, graduating in 1951. After high school, he worked for BC Forestry at Canal Flats and Invermere and later worked as a patrolman around White Swan in the East Kootenays. In 1956, he packed horses in the Yukon for the BC Department of Mines. He moved to Burnaby in the late 1950s and worked as a surveyor for David H. Burnette and Associates BC Land Surveyors and later Geophysical Surveys until the spring of 1961. During this time he met Audrey Bonnett, whom he married in 1959. They bought land north of Red Mountain in 1961 and built a log cabin there in 1967. Richie surveyed for the City of Rossland throughout the 1960s. In 1972 he went to horseshoeing school in Dawson Creek to become a farrier and completed his schooling in 1974. He attended another horseshoeing school in Olds, Alberta in 1975. Richie bought 150 acres of farmland beside the Kettle River in Grand Forks in 1977, however, he sold it in 1987 when it became too expensive to continue operating and moved back to his house at Red Mountain. After moving back he became involved with the Black Jack Ski Club and set tracks for them until the early 2000s. From 1973 until the present, he has been involved with maintenance on a stretch of the Dewdney Trail from Paterson to Christina Lake, through the Trail Horseman Society and the BC Backcountry Horsemen. He continued to be involved with horses throughout his life and would drive the Father Pat Ambulance during Golden City Days parades. In the 1990s and early 2000s, he would compete in cross country skiing championships with his wife Audrey throughout Canada, and internationally in Norway and Germany. He also competed in cycling in the Senior Games. Richie would stop competing when he was laid up with a knee injury in 2003, and he retired from his work as a farrier. It was during this time that he took up playing his father’s violin, attending his first fiddle camp at Selkirk College in 2004. He was later joined by Audrey (playing the piano), and his grandson Gabriel (also playing the violin) in 2005. He started the Golden City Fiddlers with them and various friends in 2006. |
