Description |
Green metal WWII Rossland A.R.P. helmet. The helmet has a round, domed top and a wide, slightly sloped brim. The brim of the helmet is of an equal width all the around, not providing any extra protection of the wearer’s neck like other helmets. "A.R.P." is in large white letters on the front of the helmet. The exterior of the helmet has three metal rivets—one on the top and one on the left and right side of the brim—attaching the head brace and the chinstrap to the interior of the helmet. There are patches of paint transfer, minor spots of corrosion, and scratches on the body (mostly on the right and reverse). The interior of the helmet has a round leather and plastic head brace that is attached to the helmet by a large metal brace at the top and eight small braces around the side. There is a bracket for attaching a chinstrap on the underside of the brim (chinstrap not with helmet). |

Provenance |
Rossland’s A.R.P. (air raid protection) group was formed during WWII as part of a civilian protection initiative. The group trained Rosslanders on what to do in the event of an air attack and ran monthly and sometimes weekly air raid drills. Civilians were issued gas masks (museum has three in the collection). There were several sirens set up through town and the Court House was chosen as the venue for an emergency hospital. |
